Sure, we have quad core tablets and 4G phones, but it’s nearly 2012, and we still don’t have flying cars, cloned organs, or robotic servants that can do much more than vacuum. But after many years of false starts and broken promises, we may finally get the chance to live as cyborgs thanks to a new generation of wearable gadgets that allow us to stay connected even when our smartphones are buried in a purse or pocket.

Though phones and tablets allow you to access the Internet from anywhere and most even have cameras that let you combine real world information with virtual objects, they’re way too clunky to use continuously, all day long. Imagine holding your phone in front of your face for an hour as you walk down the street, just so you can see what information it overlays on top of the landmarks you pass.

Just think about all the time it takes to pull your phone out, unlock it, and tap a few icons, just to read your messages and see whether they require a response. Those are seconds of your life you’ll never have again. What if you could view the inbox right on your arm? And all the time the phone sits in a pocket, your wrist and ear tops are bare. What a waste of skin real estate!

This past fall, WIMM started selling a developer preview version of the world’s first Android watch. I’ve been wearing one for three weeks and it still blows my mind that I can read news feeds from my favorite sites, view incoming calls, get the weather, play games, install custom apps, and someday soon check email on my wrist.

An Italian company called I’m Watch will be showing its own Android timepiece at CES. We’ve also heard that Apple is working on a curved glass iPod that goes around the wrist like some kind of iBangle, but that’s just Cupertino crudite compared to the main course Google’s preparing.

This week we read that Google is developing augmented reality glasses that would show virtual content on top of your real-world view like Google Goggles or Layar do on your phone. Having email, instant messages, and news feeds projected into my retina as I walk down the street? Viewing the Yelp rating, menu, and health report on a restaurant the minute I glance at its awning? Sign me up!

For years, the field of wearable computing has been limited to a select few inventors and pioneers who could either afford expensive, niche gadgets or had the skill to build their own. One of the great thrills of my career was meeting Steve Mann, a University of Toronto engineering professor who has been living life as a full-time cyborg for over 30 years now.

Over a decade ago, Mann boasted that his wearable computer allowed him to filter images right in front of him, adding virtual information on top of real world objects or even filtering out undesirable images like ads on the side of a bus. In just the past few years, augmented reality has found a home in mobile apps like Google Goggles, Layar reality browser, and Wikitude, all of which display virtual information on top of real-world images viewed through your phone or tablet’s camera.

You can even play AR games like DroidShooting, a first person shooter that lets you interact with virtual characters that invade the environment around you, just as long as you’re looking at the world through your phone screen. We’re heading toward a world where augmented reality content appears on the inside of your glasses or even your contact lenses. Making AR persistent leads to a whole new world of applications, like wearing virtual clothing that only your friends can see.

When I visited Mann on a trip to Toronto in 1999, he was wearing a full headgear apparatus with wires that connected to a series of circuit boards under his shirt and an antenna on top of his head that allowed him to achieve a low-speed cellular connection to a source on campus. His head gear was both a camera that could capture images in front of him and a tiny screen that could project images into his retina. Mann was able to control his computer using a single-handed keyboard device attached to his belt.

Since that time, Mann’s inventions have become less and less obtrusive. A more recent photo shows him waring a pair of wire rim glasses that looks like it could have come straight from Lens Crafters. However, the rest of the world hasn’t caught up with him yet.

The closest we’ve come to a mass market wearable computer is the ill-fated Xybernaut Poma, an ugly looking $1,499 headset that ran Windows CE when it was released to bad reviews back in 2002. A slew of major companies including Motorola make wearable computers for vertical markets or military use, but these aren’t the immersive, flexible devices you’d expect to take home with you. For example, Zypad’s WL 1100 bracelet computer is really designed for activities like scanning package barcodes in the stockroom, not staying connected on the go or changing your reality.

So why has it taken this long to bring us computer watches, augmented reality headsets, and other wearable goodies when pioneers like Mann were working on them so long ago? Part of the problem is technical. To mass produce something at a reasonable price and have it work as consumers, even early adopters, expect required big advances in optical technology, low power chips, and mobile connectivity. Only in the past couple of years have we gotten multicore SoCs (system on a chip) that fit into a tiny space and use very low wattage. We have huge 4G networks and Wi-Fi almost everywhere. We’ve got a couple of dominant mobile operating systems in Android and iOS now. And we’re starting to see huge advancements in display technology that could enable really good glasses.

However, the biggest obstacle facing wearable computing is consumer acceptance. Will the millions of consumers who’ve made smartphones a part of their daily lives be willing to put a computing device around their heads, wrists, or necks? No doubt watches have the best chance of hitting it big, because people have been wearing timepieces on their wrists for generations. But what about more cyborg-like accessories such as glasses with built-in screens or large-screen bracelets that circle your whole arm? Will they seem too nerdy or dehumanizing for the masses? It’s up to you. Don’t let the future down.

Online Editorial Director Avram Piltch oversees the production and content of LAPTOP’s web site. With a reputation as the staff’s biggest geek, he has also helped develop a number of LAPTOP’s custom tests, including the LAPTOP

In the Left corner: Dr. Paul Krugman, Nobel Prize winning economist, Princeton professor, MSNBC regular, New York Times columnist. In the Right corner: Dr. Jack Wheeler, aide to President Reagan and both Presidents Bush, author, blogger. The Right loathes Krugman as a soft-headed sell out; the Left regards Wheeler as a self-aggrandizing nut. The subject: China.

In a post on his Website To the Point (subscription required, posted October 14, 2011), Wheeler summarized the situation in China tersely, "No water, no wives, no banks -- and a hyper-dangerous military." Wheeler's writing tends towards melodrama and exaggeration for effect. Still, consider each point in turn.

No water: China's population is about three times compared to USA, in a land area about the same as the 48 contiguous states. But almost 80% of China's land area is mountain or desert, unsuited for cities or farms. Try to imagine three times the population of the U.S. living in an area not much larger than the 13 original colonies.

Further, the headwaters of China's great rivers are not actually in China: they're in Nepal, Tibet, and Kashmir. Small wonder China gets touchy about any hint of losing sway in those areas: China would literally die of thirst.

In the U.S. are so abundantly blessed by nature that we find it difficult to imagine what a problem water is too much of the rest of the world. Nonetheless, water supply is the greatest threat to civilization in much of the world, including China. Not energy. Not food. Not land. Water.

No wives. Well, certainly a big shortfall: China has something like 100 million more young men than young women. Wheeler writes ominously of the political and military dangers from 100 million bachelors.

But China has an even bigger demographic problem, as I pointed out in my post "The Sun Also Sets". China constrained their birth rate through social policy only possible in a brutal dictatorship. But they also made the same strides in public health that the Western world made in the early 20th century, dropping their death rate by a factor of three and increasing life expectancy from 40+ to 70+ years in just a generation. With falling births and falling deaths, China's population is aging. China is in a desperate race to get rich before it gets old. They will lose.

No banks. Wheeler points out that the Chinese state banks are technically insolvent. Krugman provides more color and detail in his op-ed piece "Will China Break?" Krugman sees the classic signs of a bubble: rapid growth in credit, surging real estate prices, "shadow banking" systems without government regulation or guarantees, and huge increase in investment without corresponding increase in consumer spending. Even through the murky lens of official Chinese economic data, Krugman sees the bubble bursting.

We had our financial crisis in 2008. Experts agree that we still have a long way to go to recover from it, and that many of the vulnerabilities that caused that crisis persist in our economy. Europe seems to be still going into the depths of their problems. Again, experts expect a prolonged recovery.

Is China the next to fall? If so, they cannot expect much help from the U.S. and Europe. A rise in the Yuan, the likely first consequence of trouble in China, benefits the U.S. and Europe doubly: it makes our debt held by China worth less and easier to repay, and it increases the cost of Chinese goods to our consumers, providing a stimulus to local industry and employment. The trouble in the U.S. already shuttered numerous factories in China. But that could just be a fore-taste of what could come.

If you look at raw unemployment numbers, the current problems in the U.S. and some countries in Europe are almost as bad as the Great Depression of the 1930s. But the political and social consequences are no where near the same. The public and private mechanisms put in place since the 1930s feel the strain. But they are holding, in the sense that no one in the US or Europe seriously worries about armed revolution or anarchy, as was the case in the 1930s.

Without similar safeguards in place, China could be a different story. While the economic consequences can be calculated, the political and social results cannot. Speculation and imagination are our only sources of insight.

Dangerous Military. China's military establishment is second only to ours. If one looks at spending alone, it seems no contest: China spends about what Britain and France put together spend, and about 1/6 of what we spend. But China is actually far less militarized than the United States, with 3.4 active, reserve, and paramilitary per 1,000 population, versus 9.5 for us. Most advanced countries spend between 1.8% and 2.8% of GDP on their military. China's military budget is 2.1% of GDP, at the lower end of the pack. Compare that to 4.8% for us.

What is the upshot (pun and all) of these figures? Either the U.S. is spending too much on its military, or China has the capacity to spend a lot more than it currently spends. Maybe both statements are true.

Wheeler speculates on two possible paths for Chinese military adventurism. Asserting more control of the South China Sea represents a reasonably credible scenario, but also one that would quickly unite the maritime world (U.S., Japan, Europe, India, Southeast Asia or ASEAN countries , OPEC,Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, etc.) to defend the nearly 50% of the world's shipping that goes through those waters. Wheeler offers a more nightmarish scenario: China invades Siberia to gain water, land, oil, and to divert its 100 million odd excess bachelors.

In the long lens of history, this may not be as far-fetched as it first sounds. Much of Siberia was the Maritime Provinces of China until the expandingRussian Empire seized control around 1860. The Russian Empire expanded from its start around Kiev around 950 AD to the height of the Cold War a thousand years later. Since losing in Afghanistan in 1987, the Russian Empire has been in incredibly rapid retreat, losing its Eastern European satellites and West Asian provinces to independence.

The world is full of danger spots: Pakistan, Iran, North Korea. But when I feel really grim about the prospects for the world, my thoughts turn toChina.

Finally, my apologies for spiking your holiday eggnog with a few Sichuan peppercorns.

After he saw the incidents of bullying he feels like in the hottest hell and boosts his energy and love of the country. He become so optimistic as he said he is earning much and he could count OFW like him who are earning more than a Million annually.

In our last conversation, he is still calling for support.

He agree of the criticisms in timawa.net that he may be high or sounds like how they describe him but he insisted that it is because of his love to the Philippines and his countrymen. He is willing to donate 80% of his earning just to materialize the plan.

They will not accept cash donation but only commitment as their process for legalization is not yet done
